Devil Weed: The Insidious Spread of Opioids in Rural Appalachia
16 week capstone project for Master’s of Professional Studies at Maryland Institute College of Arts
In my Stats II / Coding class, while trying to find a correlation between opioid use and poverty/low education at a county level, I found a weird outlier. While it was highly recommended that I pick a topic that had a clear thesis, this was too interesting to pass up. This is the result of 15 weeks of pulling on threads, gathering a massive but still incomplete set of data, in the attempt to understand why some counties had such outlier rates of per-capita opioid use.
This project is incomplete, as there’s only so much you can do in 16 weeks.
